What the numbers say about ELK
ELK Studios releases a smaller number of games, each carrying a heavier rulebook. Nothing here is designed to be fully understood in five minutes. The payoff goes to players willing to study the paytable, and the studio adds a menu, X-iter, that lets you decide how you step into the feature play. The clearest showcase is Pirots, a series that keeps building fresh layers onto one collecting engine. Among the studios we cover, few are more rewarding for mechanics fans. Casual players may find it heavy going.
Pirots 5 and the CollectR engine
Pirots is the studio’s flagship series, and it runs on a mechanic called CollectR. Four collector birds move across a grid, each picking up neighbouring gems that match its colour. Every collection pushes forward progress that can enlarge the grid.
The SlotSpecs listing for the series is Pirots 5. Confirmed figures:
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| RTP | 96% |
| Volatility | Medium-High |
| Max win | 10,000x |
| Release date | 23 July 2026 |
The studio’s game page describes an expandable 6×6 grid in which Captain Blackfeather converts birds into gems. Clearing the grid opens a Cursed Temple coin game, and a Secret Door rotates to shuffle symbols around. Our review pays most attention to how the temple traps cut collecting runs short. It also points out that the 96% top RTP beats the 94% default logged for the earlier numbered chapters. The 10,000x ceiling is consistent with ELK’s own page and with the wider series.
X-iter: paying for a different start
X-iter is ELK’s in-house feature-entry system. It appears by name on the studio’s about page, and the 2021 acquisition announcement presents it as a selection of predefined special modes that let players go straight into the action. Every mode is priced at its own multiple of the base bet and alters what the following spins can deliver.
Pirots 5 shows the full span. Five entry points are on offer, starting with a 3x bet that lifts the chance of triggering the bonus to more than four times normal, and ending with a 250x bet that drops you directly into the Super Bonus. In our free demo those prices come out of virtual coins, but the logic still matters: paying more at the door changes the shape of the outcomes. It does not improve the long-run return.
RTP versions and volatility at ELK
There is no single RTP that ELK applies across its range. Our Pirots 5 review notes several RTP builds of that game, the highest being 96%. As with most current studios, then, the figure you see depends on which version is in front of you. ELK’s about page credits statistical analysis as the basis of its maths models. We have not seen any volatility policy covering the whole studio, so the Medium-High label above refers only to Pirots 5.
How ELK describes itself
The studio’s about page places its founding in 2013 and boils its philosophy down to "quality over quantity". Three principles sit underneath that line:
- Solid game ideas paired with themes that suit them.
- Polished artwork and animation.
- Maths models built on statistical analysis and large volumes of data.
Regulatory details appear on that same page. ELK is licensed by the Great Britain Gambling Commission under account 40844, and by the Malta Gaming Authority with a B2B critical gaming supply licence, MGA/B2B/605/2018, issued on 27 February 2019. Two second-class Romanian licences are also held, and the studio appears on the registers of Ontario’s AGCO and Greece’s Hellenic Gaming Commission.
From independent to Light & Wonder
Scientific Games announced its acquisition of ELK Studios on 1 December 2021, describing the business as a developer based in Stockholm. The release singled out Wild Toro II, Katmandu and Cygnus as hit games and drew attention to X-iter. Deal terms were not made public.
By March 2022, Scientific Games had announced it would trade as Light & Wonder, which is where ELK sits today. The new parent intended to bring ELK titles into the US and Canadian markets.
The right player for ELK
- Feature-engine fans who like working out how a system fits together.
- Players who want control over the route into a bonus, via X-iter.
- Series regulars, since every Pirots chapter extends the one before.
Anyone after short rulebooks or low volatility will be better served elsewhere.
Plus points and minus points
Plus points
- CollectR is an unusual engine, refined over an entire series.
- X-iter sets out entry modes with transparent prices.
- The about page lists licences complete with their numbers.
Minus points
- Lengthy rules make the games slow to learn.
- Multiple RTP builds per title mean the figure can change from one version to the next.
